2019 Youth Magic Dove’s Magician of the Year and 2019 Youth Florida Magician of the Year, Justin Cowgill, teaches the “Trick That Fooled Harry Houdini” from Magic Dove’s Triumph Deck Plus. This is a popular trick made famous because of Dai Vernon.  History reports that Dai Vernon performed this trick and fooled Harry Houdini. Harry Houdini claimed that he could not be fooled by any card trick. Dai Vernon heard about this claim and created a trick to fool Harry Houdini. After the performance Harry was unable to figure out how the trick was done. You see, Harry was remarkably familiar with magic card moves and he “assumed” Dia Vernon was using a magic move, but he did not recognize that Dia Vernon had combined the magic move with another sneaky element.  Houdini selected a card and signed it. The signed card was placed very clearly and cleanly second card from the top of the deck. The selected card was immediately shown to be on top. The trick was repeated, but this time Dai Vernon asked Harry Houdini himself to place the card second from the top. He wanted Harry to be certain that the card was second from top. Again, the selected card jumped to the top of the deck. Finally, the card was placed in the middle of the deck and yet again the card jumped to the top of the deck. Dai Vernon’s trick went down in history as the “Trick That Fooled Harry Houdini.” There have been many variations of this trick down through the years and it is unclear exactly how close they are to Dai Vernon’s original version.  At the end of the video is a blooper.
